Morning Docket

Morning Docket: 10.15.18

* When you're better known for your love of beer than your love of anything else, here's the TMZ headline you get after feeding those in need: "JUSTICE KAVANAUGH SERVING MEALS TO HOMELESS ... Hold the Beer, Please." [TMZ] * And in other Kavanaugh news, a group of witches will be holding a ritualistic event to hex the newly confirmed justice. Their goal is "to make Kavanaugh suffer," and they plan to cast a spell and use effigies, coffin nails, and graveyard dirt to get the job done. [USA Today] * President Trump defended his mockery of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, saying in his 60 Minutes interview that "if I had not made that speech, we would not have won." When reminded that he was being a disgusting human being, he brushed it off, saying, "I'm not going to get into it, because we won. It doesn't matter. We won." [NBC News] * Per President Trump, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell is “the greatest leader in history” because he's so awesome at pushing through conservative federal judges with lifetime appointments. "Keep sending them our way, and we’ll keep changing the court system forever," McConnell said. Brooooo. [New York Times] * How do we know Pat Cipollone is the next White House counsel? "I haven’t named the new White House counsel, but over a short period of time. Pat’s a great guy. I don’t want to say, but he’s a great guy. He’s a very talented and he’s a very good man, but I don’t want to say.” You've already said enough, Mr. President. [Washington Post]

Non-Sequiturs

Non-Sequiturs: 05.05.16

* Ted Cruz never should have left the courtroom, it's the only place where his personality didn't get in his way. [Slate] * Meet Olympic hopeful Ashley Higginson. A track and field steeplechaser, she is a recent graduate of Rutgers Law School (which she got into after a personal plea to the dean) and has already passed the New York bar. Go Ashley! [Sports Illustrated] * I may have disagreed with him about Seattle's most infamous sports fan but Marc Randazza just secured a big win for TMZ getting wealthy Instagram porn-star tosser Dan Bilzerian's claim dismissed AND making Bilzerian cover TMZ's 22K legal bill. [The Dirty] * Good news! The Virgin Islands Supreme Court just found that calling a lawyer a liar is not defamatory. Conduct yourself accordingly. [Legal Profession Blog] * Ferguson prosecutor Stephanie Karr is being removed as city attorney after the DOJ's report on the city singled out her role in numerous constitutional violations. [St. Louis Post Dispatch] * A French worker sues his employer over boring work. Sounds like a fascinating caszzzzzzzzz... [Law and More]

Non-Sequiturs

Non-Sequiturs: 02.26.16

* Justice Thomas chats it up with a TMZ reporter about Lance Ito, NYU, and his lunch at Capital Grille. For as engaged as he is, it's weird that he won't divulge what he ordered, right? I assume it was a steak and probably some kind of cola. [TMZ] * "Hey, buddy... we're going to take back your money because your old firm sucked. Sorry it took us four years to notice!" [National Law Journal] * Dewey know anyone breathing a little easier today? Former executive director Stephen DiCarmine and chief financial officer Joel Sanders saw 30 counts of grand larceny (15 each) dismissed today. [Law360] * Were you wondering when the next Supreme Court justice is going to die? Because there's an app for that... apparently. [Slate] * Remember Judge Richard Cebull's racist emails? Well, there are more, but we won't get to see them. [National Law Journal] * T-Swift is now in the litigation finance game. Imma let her finish but I think some of these other litigation finance firms are the greatest of all time. [Mighty] * Lawyer suspended for Facebook misconduct. That's a thing now. [Legal Profession Blog] * Keeping up the pressure: Fix the Court writes Chief Justice Roberts requesting faster access to Supreme Court audio in the name of transparency. He will probably go ahead and ignore this. [Fix the Court] * How do Biglaw bigwigs really live? Vivia Chen visits the home of our 2013 Lawyer of the Year, Roberta Kaplan of Paul Weiss. [The Careerist] * Attorney Renee Rabinowitz has had enough of this religiously cloaked sexism stuff. She's suing El Al for making her switch seats because an ultra-Orthodox man refused to sit next to a woman. [New York Times]

Morning Docket

Morning Docket: 08.11.15

* "[H]e’s just a litigious person. Unless he has something going on in the public eye, he can’t exist.” Former Clippers owner Donald Sterling filed a suit against V. Stiviano and TMZ, accusing them of invading his privacy by sharing a recording of his racism. [New York Post] * A jury found that an ex-municipal court judge who was convicted of insurance fraud was lying when he claimed that he'd been attacked outside the courthouse by thugs wielding a toilet tank lid. We guess you could say that the jurors were able to flush out all of this guy's crap. [ABA Journal] * Talk about a Hail Mary suit: Ted Wells of Paul Weiss and NFL locker-room bullying report fame is being sued for defamation by the former Miami Dolphins offensive-line coach who happened to be one of the casualties of his investigation. [Washington Post] * Deutsche Bank's general counsel will step down from his position at the end of the year. Deutsche Bank joins JPMorgan and Bank of America as the third big bank to have announced a change in GC within the past month. [Big Law Business / Bloomberg BNA] * If you're considering applying to law school, here are five steps you can take to write a "great" personal statement. Surprisingly, one step isn't mentioning your guaranteed employment at a family firm after graduation. [Law Admissions Lowdown / U.S. News]

6th Circuit

Morning Docket: 12.09.13

* After its patent battle in the courts, Apple wants Samsung to pay for a portion of MoFo’s legal fees. When you think of it, $15.7 million is a rather piddling amount when full freight is $60 million. [The Recorder] * Say goodbye to your pensions! As it turns out, law review articles aren’t so useless after all. Detroit’s foray into Chapter 9 eligibility is the brainchild of a Jones Day partner and associate duo. [Am Law Daily] * It must be really stressful to plan a wedding when your defamation victory is on appeal to the Sixth Circuit. The latest chapter in the Sarah Jones v. TheDirty.com case could mean curtains for online speech. [AP] * When it comes to their credit ratings, stand-alone law schools are getting screwed due to their inability to put asses in their empty seats. Four out of five schools profiled could be in big trouble. Which ones? [WSJ Law Blog (sub. req.)] * “You need to not dress like that.” TMZ’s attorney, Jason Beckerman, is an alumnus of Kirkland & Ellis, and he was quickly advised by a producer that he needed to lose his lawyer duds. [California Lawyer]
